• About Vatzlav by Slawomir Mrozek...

Bears et al Unveiled in Vatzlav

Liberty consists of the power to do whatever does not injure others. So says Vatzlav amidst a striptease act meant to entice the masses.

Former New York Times writer, Mel Gussow describes this play as "a three-ring circus of a comedy, cataloguing the injustices - and the sheer craziness - of civilization."

See a bear-man, a burlesquing Justice, a blood-sucking wealthy Bat couple, and a pleading Oedipus Rex all encountering a washed-up Everyman rogue slave determined to outwit them all.
"Destiny you want me to be free…" continues Vatzlav and the adventure begins.
This absurd frolicking production has something for everyone. Vatzlav, by playwright Slawomir Mrozek is a fast paced tragic-comedy that examines the survival strategies of the vulnerable versus the corrupt and controlling.

Censored for the better part of fourteen years, in Eastern Europe, this performance is a fitting tribute to the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the work of one of Poland's best-known and beloved short story writers and satirists.
Presented by Theatre In the Raw Society - the grassroots professional company behind the success of the sold-out "Bruce - The Musical" from the 2008 "Heart of the City Festival."
Don't miss the action from the company that has been "Exposing voices seldom heard", since 1994.

Don't Miss this one folks... it's a complete riot!!!! I laughed my head off... it's like a live cartoon with all the wonderful characters - very well cast with great acting... produced by Vancouver's own Theatre In the Raw... Check it out - runs next week again starting wednesday... http://www.theatreintheraw.ca/tickets

This play is a great farce, a satire, and at the same time a sparkling, funny and original creation. During his travels and adventures in a mythical land Vatzlav meets Mr. and Mrs. Bat, a capitalistic couple feeding on the blood of the people: their forty-year-old boy, who becomes a bear and incites the folk to rebellion; the naive and beautiful Justine, who plays the role of Justice and who believes that babies are conceived by the mind; General Barbaro and his army of liberation; the wily peasants, Quail and Sassafras; the self-proclaimed Genius, who seeks to bring justice to an unjust world & Oedipus Rex, the self-important, blind spy and guardian of the law.

A brilliant black comedy!
